Diversifying the Professoriate: A Study of Doctoral Students' Career Pathways at an Elite Research University

Abstract

Several factors influence the career trajectories of doctoral students and their paths to the professoriate. Drawing on graduate student socialization theory, I conducted a qualitative study of doctoral students at an elite research university. I found students’ career decisions were largely determined by the quality of their advisor relationship.
