The purpose of this study is to investigate the five-year retention rate of initially certified teachers and to determine what characteristics predicted retention in STEM vs. non-STEM fields. Three cohorts of teachers who graduated from public colleges and universities in a southeastern state were followed into the K-12 public schools in the state. The retention rate for both STEM and non-STEM teachers was over 70% for all cohorts. Different variables predicted STEM retention for different cohorts including gender, race and degree level. Age, salary level and number of students obtaining free/reduced price lunches were not predictors for any cohort. Because of the current concern about teacher shortages, especially in STEM fields, this is a time topic of study.
