Years of research have provided evidence of greater academic achievement and positive learning outcomes for children with increased family involvement (Caspe, Lopez, Chu &Weiss, 2011). Recognizing the changing demographic trend in our schools in many urban areas, it is important to ensure that teacher preparation programs include family engagement strategies as part of the curriculum as a means of preparing future teachers to meet the needs of diverse students and families. Using a survey research design, the study examined preservice teachers’ perspectives and knowledge on their preparation in learning family engagement strategies and practices during teacher education program. The results indicated that most preservice teachers felt somewhat or not prepared to partner with diverse families in an urban school environment.
