In this paper, we analyze the results of an exploratory study to determine the influence of factors associated to student performance in two tests (curriculum-oriented vs. competency-based). The study is part of a four-year research project —led by the University of Chile— aimed to develop new assessments for using in the Common Admission System for Higher Education currently being discussed in the Chilean Parliament.
The research team developed assessments based on the PISA framework. The assessments were piloted in a sample of students also participating in the National University Admission tests. In this paper, we explore the influence of socioeconomic factors in student achievement and discuss their implications for developing new assessment tools for higher education admission purposes.
