Inviting Hip-Hop Into the Mathematics Class: Perceptions of Prospective Teachers

Sat, April 14, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Seventh Floor, Empire/Hudson Room

Abstract

This research interrogated prospective teachers’ (PT) conception of hip-hop as a tool to teach mathematics and offers insight into how it might be perceived amongst other PTs from a similar demographic, specifically in cases where their identities are distinct from the students they teach. The research that the current proposal is based on comes from data collected at a large research university in Texas where PTs participated in a half-day professional development experience organized by the author. Constant comparative analysis was used to analyze the data collected from a focus group setting. The results depicted in this research assert that PTs valued components of the workshop but questioned whether they would ever need to use these strategies.
