Mon, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

This empirical study sought to investigate the relationships between demographic variables, religious affiliation, school life and civic engagement outcomes among secondary students from both mainstream and immigrant backgrounds in Hong Kong. A sample of 15000 secondary students was surveyed with a paper questionnaire. Correlation and multiple regression analysis of Structural Equation Modelling was performed. Religious affiliation was found to be a positive predictor for civic participation regardless of family SES or ethnicity. Appreciation of spiritual health is also a key predictor for positive civic engagement. Likewise, obtaining higher language scores was conducive for participatory civic engagement with better civic knowledge, attitude and concepts of being a good citizen.
