Compensatory Effects Between Conscientiousness and Task Values on Academic Outcomes

Abstract

Conscientiousness and interest have been regarded as key predictors of academic effort and achievement. In addition, recent research demonstrated the compensatory interaction between them on academic effort. The present research examined the compensatory interaction between conscientiousness and interest value not only on academic effort but on academic achievement as well. We also tested the compensatory interaction between conscientiousness and utility value on both academic effort and achievement. A total of 830 5-12th grade students were participated in this study. As hypothesized, we found a compensatory interaction effect between conscientiousness and interest value on both academic effort and achievement in four school subjects, including German, English, mathematics, and biology. The same interaction effects were observed for utility value as well.
