Acculturation and Minoritization Experiences of an Afro-Caribbean Female Student at a U.S. Public University

Abstract

This study sought to understand the stress-related acculturative experiences of an Afro-Caribbean female doctoral student in a public university and the effects of those stressors on her achievement outcomes and persistence. The ‘triple bind’ phenomenon, in addition to stress-inducing acculturative episodes, resulted in challenges to achievement and a desire to attrite. Situated in the Stress Buffer hypothesis, I explore linkages between stress-related acculturative experiences, minoritization, operationalizing social support networks, and achievement outcomes.
