This paper analyzes the case of a public university that uses an innovative educational model to encourage equity through systems that improve student access and retention. The theoretical perspective articulates equity with a student-centered educational approach. Applying a qualitative approach, the authors assess the progress made by this institution and the challenges imposed by agents’ conceptions and practices. Progress has been made in expanding access to university and in compensating for socio-cultural inequalities among low-SES students, but pedagogical challenges remain to meet their diverse needs. The authors conclude that this is a valuable initiative, but requires a more thorough appropriation of the model and the collective work of all agents to achieve an appropriate balance between equity and educational quality.
