The Business Influences on Teachers' Work

Abstract

This study aims to understand the experiences of teachers working in for-profit international schools and the business influences on teachers’ work. Schools are increasingly being judged on principles of business such as accountability, competitiveness, and efficiency. The mixed-methods research began with interviews of teachers working in for-profit international schools run by large, multi-national education management organizations. Teachers’ reports of their experiences were then used to create measurement instruments to find the patterns of influences on teachers’ work. The instruments were developed with Mokken Scale analysis and Rasch analysis. The final analysis found the influences of business practices affects the work of teachers across types of schools.
