Abstract

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are the two fastest growing racial groups in the United States. Yet, literature on how their navigation of the college choice process is difficult to find. The current study was guided by the following research question: How does family provide critical support for AAPI students as they navigate the college-going process? Interviews were conducted with 45 Southeast Asian American and Pacific Islander students. Findings indicate that families held high expectations, provided encouragement, and offered continuous support throughout the process. Implications for research and practice are discussed.
