Using Michigan high school transcript data, this paper estimates the effects of high school math courses on postsecondary enrollment and degree completion. After accounting for students’ self-selection into course, results indicate that completing Algebra II or more advanced courses have significantly larger effects on college enrollment and completion, particularly four-year colleges. Completing Algebra II increases the probability of 2-year colleges enrollment measured within five or six years of starting high school and that of completing 2-year colleges in five or six years from graduation. Furthermore, exploiting the upsurge in the share of students taking Algebra II as a result of statewide high school graduation requirement, this study examines the changes in the return to Algebra II.
