Examining Schools as Learning Organizations and School Performance

Abstract

This study examined learning organization in the school context based on Watkins and Marsick’s theoretical framework. Utilizing a theory-based instrument, Dimensions of the Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ), with a sample of 485 teachers and staff in elementary and high schools, the study examined the dimensional structure of the learning organization construct and explored the relationship between the learning dimensions and school achievement. Initial study results suggested that a learning organization is a multi-dimensional concept and that both people and structural domains of learning dimensions are essential for schools to become learning organizations. Results also provided support that schools functioning as learning organizations have better academic performance.
