Countering the Power of the Dominant Discourse

Mon, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Second Floor, Clinton Suite

Abstract

Certain narratives are commonly used to explain why schools are inequitable. While these narratives discourage and disempower leaders from taking the actions needed to produce different outcomes for their students, they also involve a fallible, but hard-to-crack logic (Dyson & Genishi, 1994). This story highlights the critical and challenging role that school leaders play in fostering different narratives in order to foster different outcomes.
