We explore the ways that learning occurs through simultaneously collaborative and competitive game play in e-sports. Specifically, to this aim, we evaluate how collegiate e-sports players demonstrate aspects of collaborative learning during high stakes matches. Focusing on one case study team, our findings show that players engage in learning-relevant practices, including deliberate practice, productive risk taking, and reflective techniques. They further evidenced improved domain mastery and group potency, as well as a strong focus on task cohesion. We contend that e-sports offer unique opportunities for collaborative learning in real-world settings.
