The English Learners in the Mainstream Project: A Comprehensive Teacher Training Model

Sat, April 14, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

Despite increasing numbers of English learners (ELs) in US schools, most mainstream K-12 teachers report that they have not been adequately prepared to teach ELs (Samson & Collins, 2012). In order to address this need, the researchers wrote and received a $1.5 million grant from the United States Department of Education- Office of English Language Acquisition to prepare pre-service and in-service teachers to meet the needs of ELs. For the in-service branch, ESL teachers train to become peer coaches who provide professional development and coaching for their mainstream colleagues.
