"You're Getting Money Because We're Here, So Please Serve Us": Students' Self-Identities at Hispanic-Serving Institutions

Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 1

Abstract

Drawing on interviews from a longitudinal study with 30 undergraduates at three Hispanic Serving Institutions, this qualitative study explores how students of various racial and ethnic backgrounds make sense of their enrollment at a Hispanic Serving Institution. Building on prior research (García, 2016) that explores the complicated nexus between students' identities and HSIs' institutional identity, we draw attention to the chronic elision of students’ narrations of their self-identities subsumed within the panethnic banner of Hispanicity. We conclude by offering policy-relevant practices that can enable HSIs to better enhance their support of the intraethnic diversity within their student populations.
