The use of videos in online courses is a widely used dissemination format. This investigation sought to understand how students’ perceptions and experiences in viewing instructional videos impacted their learning. Students were shown videos from an introductory statistics course and were asked questions about their background, perceptions of the videos, and content presented in the videos. We estimated beta regression models to discern whether background and perceptions influenced performance on these content-related questions. Variables that impacted performance included being comfortable in accessing online course materials, being an international student, enjoying the videos, and feeling the videos were not too impersonal. We interpret these results in terms of theories that speak to learning in the online space.
