This paper explores African American middle school males perceptions of the student-teacher relationship. Students identified ways in which student teacher relationships impact or mediate school culture, academic achievement, and trustworthiness. The authors will discuss the ways that the student perspectives align to or contrast from existing literature on teachers’ perceptions of student-teacher relationships. These findings have potential implications for fostering better student teacher relationships, closing the student achievement gaps for African American males, and future implications are discussed.
