The paper identifies school and district improvement approaches that help schools that are “desegregated” – meaning they have diverse bodies in their buildings—become more fully “integrated”-- places where all children learn at high levels, feel included, appreciate their own and other cultures, understand racism, and work to dismantle it. Despite the many clearly recognized benefits that high quality integrated schools offer, our country has few of them, and the pathways to develop and sustain them are not widely understood. Drawing on work at a university center partnering with four districts and a dozen schools over the last two years, the paper provides a systemic approach to improvement, a set of related diagnostic tools, resources, promising practices, and coaching approaches.
