Abstract

Mobile devices have been an integral part of the daily lives of today’s children and youngsters. Harnessing mobile technologies to offer learners new student-centred learning experiences is a very hot issue in education. Against this backdrop, we have proposed a learning approach—GPS-supported Outdoor Context-Aware Social Inquiry (GOCASI) to social and humanities education. Apart from discussing the pedagogic design of GOCASI, this paper also reports our recent study on evaluating the learning effectiveness of GOCASI, in comparison with the conventional outdoor social inquiry learning approach. It involved a total of 186 students from different academic-achieving schools in Hong Kong. The findings of the study provide grounds for upholding a wider adoption of GOCASI in social and humanities education.
