Peer-Mediated Interventions: Enhancing Inclusive Vocational and Social Success for Youth With Severe Disabilities

Sat, April 14, 4:05 to 5:35pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

Peer-mediated interventions (PMI) are evidence-based practices that have demonstrated improvement in academic and social skills of students with severe disabilities (SwSD) and their peers without disabilities in general education classrooms (Carter, Cushing, Clark, & Kennedy, 2005). However, little is known about the effects of PMI on vocational and social skills of students in work-based learning (WBL) settings. Students with severe disabilities may have limited access to WBL settings in high school to learn and practice skills with peers (Guy, Sitlington, Laresen, & Frank, 2009). Therefore, this study used a multiple baseline design across participants with generalization probes to examine the effects of PMI in a WBL setting on the independent work and social skills of SwSD and peers.
