This paper works at the margins of the transgender teacher candidate experience, where ways of knowing have spilled over the normalized boundaries that demarcate what is acceptable and what is "excessive." Through a qualitative case study with our university's first transgender teacher candidate, we focus on ways of reimagining our institutional spaces and practices to account for and support genderqueer teacher candidates in their various school environments. Showing particular attention to language and power, we think about ways in which representation works to undermine and sanction those who flout heteronormativity. We engage in self-reflexive work by situating our own hetero-subjectivities and we work toward the margins with an emphasis on process and difference.
