This paper uses a design case approach to describe learning objectives, storylines, and game mechanics of three non-digital games intended to enhance middle school age girls’ understanding of computer science concepts. We discuss the development team’s design decisions, including failures in the initial game designs and challenges in the design process. Our discussion focuses in particular on the rationale behind the choice of computer science concepts, game play that would instantiate these concepts, and appealing storylines. This design case can serve as a useful precedent for other designers interested in creating games that support understanding of computer science concepts, and for educational game designers in general.
