In this study, we proposed and tested an instrument measuring campus racial climate (CRC), sense of belonging (SB), and resilience to address the gap of instrumentation in psychosocial variables as related to race and retention. In Study 1, we surveyed 307 students enrolled in mathematics courses using the 39-item instrument; EFA results yielded a 3-factor structure: CRC (α = .934), SB (α = .934), and resilience (α = .932). Study 2 was conducted surveying 373 students from mathematics courses using a revised instrument to cross-validate the 3-factor structure; α ≥ .80 for each scale. Results provide support for the instrument’s validity and offer an alternative tool for institutions seeking awareness of factors affecting student retention with respect to race-related constructs.
