Indigenous Cultural Practices: Our Foundations for Our Research Methodologies

Fri, April 13, 4:05 to 5:35pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 3

Abstract

Being an Indigenous cultural practitioner in a Western academy can be extremely isolating. On the other hand, through critical reflection, sharing our stories out loud, and connecting with people and frameworks, we now realize that our cultural practices are the most important part of who we are as researchers. Our cultural practices have literally saved our lives, in and out of the academy. We believe this work and reflection to be significant as Indigenous students continue to struggle with cultural dissonance, especially in the area of research methodologies. Hence, we believe that our stories and self-studies can be helpful to others to help them connect parts of themselves and make it relevant for their work in education.
