Engaging the Nontraditional Black Male Teacher in Undergraduate Research

Sun, April 15, 2:45 to 4:15pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Concourse Level, Concourse E Room

Abstract

There is a growing body of research focused on non-traditional Black male students (Goings, 2016). Very little research exists of non-traditional Black male students who aspire to be teachers in teacher education programs and engage in research experiences as an undergraduate student. This presentation will provide an overview of research on non-traditional Black male students, pre-service Black male teachers in teacher education (Yates, et. al, 2008) programs, and illuminate key elements of non-traditional Black male students’ experiences that are important to consider in supporting them in teacher education programs and undergraduate research experiences.
