The Role of Critical Reflexivity in the Professional Development of Professional Developers: A Co-Autoethnographic Exploration

Mon, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Eighth Floor, Gallery 8

Abstract

The proposed presentation focuses on findings from a co-autoethnography in a collaborative project in which two classroom teachers work together with university researchers to facilitate professional development workshops in science education for elementary teachers. Grounded in critical theoretical perspectives, we have undertaken autoethnographies to examine our own professional development in the process of facilitating the professional development of our colleagues. In the proposed paper presentation we seek to elaborate four claims regarding what has emerged from the processes of reflection, dialogue, and action that we engaged in. Thus, the goal is to examine the professional development of the professional developers themselves (the five authors of this proposal), through a reflexive process of collaborative autoethnography (“co-autoethnography”) grounded on dialogue and reflection.
