What Does It Mean for Practices in the Social Studies to Be High Leverage?

Abstract

While there is an emerging body of scholarship in subject areas like mathematics, science, and English Language Arts to identify, teach, and research high leverage practices (HLPs) to teacher candidates, there are limited explicit efforts to do so in the social studies. Without the inclusion of the social studies, HLPs might calcify around existing examples that fail to include perspectives that emanate from the social studies including citizenship education and disciplinary approaches. This exploratory literature review uses a narrative methodology to provide a map of current research in the field and propose directions for future research in social studies and HLPs.
