Online Versus on Campus: A Quantitative Study Comparing Help-Seeking Beliefs of Community College Students

Abstract

In order to be competitive in the global and economic workforce, the U.S. needs to develop professionals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Help-seeking is critical to student success and achievement in all majors, especially STEM. It is important to examine information technology courses specifically, since they are rapidly growing and include a broad spectrum of professional opportunities. This study examined the academic help-seeking beliefs for community college students taking an introductory information technology course in online versus on-campus learning settings. Findings showed online students in this study to have lower levels of help-seeking beliefs than those of on-campus students.
