In an education system where many students are underserved—particularly racial and linguistic minority students—we must support incoming teachers in developing learning environments that better serve their future students. Decades of research have called into question the efficacy of teacher-centered classroom models and promoted alternative approaches to education. However, shifting towards a different educational model is not an easy, straightforward process. In this case study, we analyze the experience of one pre-service teacher as she works with elementary students at an afterschool club designed to push against traditional notions of classroom teaching and learning. Our research focuses on her beliefs and ideas regarding children, schooling and learning, as well as her trajectory of participation in this afterschool club.
