Mamás as Education Policy Makers: Latina Mothers in the Era of Local Control

Tue, April 17, 8:15 to 10:15am, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Lower Level, Chelsea Room

Abstract

This study explores how the personal histories, worldviews, and pedagogies of Latina mothers of English learners inform their engagement in English Language Advisory Committees. The findings from this study enhance our understanding about the role Latina mothers of English learners play and want to play in setting local education budgetary and program decisions. Bringing to the forefront the insights and standpoints of active Latina mothers, the findings from the project could transform the ways in which policymakers and practitioners understand, relate to, and create reciprocal partnerships with mamás (mothers) of English learners in schools and districts, a critical component to the success of California’s new collaborative finance education law known as the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF).
