Uncontrollable Risk Factors on the Talent Development Trajectory in Math and Science and Their Moderators

Tue, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

Using the national panel data in the U.S., this study identified high achievers in math and science by their scores on standardized college entrance exams and investigated the disparities in the identification due to student-level and school-level covariates that are not controlled by high school students. Female, other races than White and Asian, students from lower SES families still had much less opportunities to develop their talents in math and science during high school. Further, mathematics self-efficacy and AP/IB programs were effective moderators mostly for traditional majority groups in math and science talent development, but they did not work well for underrepresented groups.
