Humanizing STEAM: Secondary Math and Science Preservice Teachers' Conceptions and Initial Translations Into Practice

Sun, April 15, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

We present understandings of the nascent implementation of Humanizing STEAM by secondary math and science preservice teachers in an urban teacher residency program. This study aims to learn how Pre-Service teachers of math and science perceive Humanizing STEAM and how that might be translated into practice. Teachers attempt to implement STEAM using a developing Humanizing STEAM framework anchored by 1) Steam Identity, 2) Steam Task, and 3) Steam Discourse. The evolving understanding of STEAM by pre-service math and science teachers is analyzed through quarterly reflections and the implementation of STEAM is reviewed through STEAM tasks.
