The Malleability of Design Problems

Abstract

This study discusses the malleability of design problems. Taking the theoretical perspective of designerly problem framing, the design process of a focal group of youth working on an engineering design challenge at a maker space was analyzed. Two perspectives stood out: a fixation on the original design problem versus extending the design problem and reframing. The study highlights how learners should be encouraged to not take design problems as given, not to be fixated on one solution, and to be open towards extending and refining of the problem in the design process. Such mindsets can result in a stronger ownership of the problem and enhanced learning during collaborative design.
