Sun, April 15, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Eighth Floor, Gallery 8

Abstract

I examine the experiences of students of diverse cultural and social backgrounds, to gain a glimpse into factors that may challenge their engagement in their school curriculum, and challenges that their teachers may encounter in supporting their students’ active participation in the curriculum. The following questions guide this exploration - What do beginning teachers wish they knew about preparing curriculum in diverse school communities? What kinds of knowledge do teacher educators need to pass on to teacher candidates¬¬ in order to adequately prepare them for this challenge? Knowledge gained from this study contributes to our body of experiential, inquiry-based research addressing nuances and complexities of meeting the needs of students of diverse background in school.
