School-Based Strategies for Building Resilience and Safe Environments: A Case Study

Abstract

The purpose of this program was to enhance the resilience and a sense of safety in a school setting by way of a longitudinal study spanning six years (2000 to 2005). Resilience was measured under for constructs: school competencies, social adeptness, coping strategies, and positive outlook. Safety was considered in total and included general feeling of safety in the school community. Treatment plan or program included student education in small groups and large community gatherings, lessons embedded within the curriculum which taught the various skills needed for resilience and for positive behavioral choices. Repeated measures anova was the statistics of choice. Program implementation yielded significant results with potential for wider application.
