Using a mixed methods research design, the authors examined differences in self-efficacy regarding classroom management styles and practices between alternative teacher candidates (AC) and traditional teacher candidates (TC). The Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (long form) (Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk Hoy, 2001) was used as the pre/post instrument before and after a semester course on classroom management. Quantitative data indicated non-significant mean scores for student engagement, instructional strategies, and classroom management. Effective classroom management tools, change in dispositions, and instructional strategies were central qualitative themes shared by both groups. Based on qualitative and quantitative results, researchers suggest that more focus on how to actively engage students should be included in a course on classroom management.
