Engineering Ethics from University Studies through Professional Practice

Mon, April 16, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Second Floor, Beekman

Abstract

Engineering is one of the largest professions in the United States. All accredited engineering degree programs require attention to professional ethics, and some graduate programs incorporate instruction in responsible conduct of research. After graduation, when engineers enter professional practice, the engineering licensure requirements in six states require professional development hours in ethics annually or biennially. I will describe the typical content and pedagogy of education in engineering ethics from the university through professional practice. I will then summarize previous research on engineering ethics education and suggest directions for future research.
