Federal, state, and local policy efforts to reform teacher evaluation have sought to improve the quality of teaching and student outcomes in US public schools. In this panel, we will discuss research associated with the policy and politics of teacher evaluation, providing historical context of teacher evaluation policies in the United States as well as the important roles that instructional and educational leaders play in implementing teacher evaluation policies. We also discuss the development of a collaborative effort to re-invent teacher preparation across the state of New York through the design of a clinical, rigorous, professional educator preparation program that seeks to balance accountability policies and economic development goals within the state.
