Session Type: Symposium
Purpose of the Session
The purpose of this session is to foster critical dialog concerning the notions and conceptualizations of the curriculum of place and space, particularly rural places and spaces. There has not been in cultural studies or curriculum studies such a dialogue about the issues on rural place. There have been discussions of southern place, but not specifically on rural place in the United States and globally. This session addresses that lack.
Rural Education and Curriculum Theory: Identities of Place - Reta Ugena Whitlock, Kennesaw State University
Rural Spaces of Longing and Protest - Todd Alan Price, National-Louis University
The Rural Is Nowhere: Bringing Indigeneity and Urbanism Into Educational Research - Kelsey Dayle John, Syracuse University; Derek R. Ford, DePauw University
Who Am I? Cultural Identity in Rural Schools - Priya Parmar, Brooklyn College - CUNY
Rural Place: Media, Violent Cartographies, and Chaotic Disruptions - William M. Reynolds, Georgia Southern University
