Methodological Innovations in Mixed Methods Research

Abstract

Critics have argued that as the mixed methods movement has developed, the emphasis has been placed on simplistic designs with a confirmatory mindset that downplay the analytical potential of a studies that contain a strong emergent component. The purpose of this symposium is to demonstrate the versatility of mixed method approaches to research by illustrating how innovative, distinctive methodologies are being developed on the basis of variety of methods conventionally identified with qualitative traditions. These include mixed methods uses with phenomenography, grounded theory, case study, and visual methods. Four presenters use exemplars from diverse fields to illustrate innovative methodological approaches to mixed methods research.
