Session Summary

Redesigning Educational Systems: Influences and Practices Around Structural Changes in U.S. Education

Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Second Floor, Gibson Suite

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

U.S. public schooling is undergoing significant change as new kinds of educational systems such as Portfolio Management Models and charter management organizations emerge. This symposium explores the roles played by public educational systems, the ways in which systems are being redesigned, and the policy, political, and institutional forces shaping these changes. Through a conceptual review and papers on city-level system redesign and campaign contributions designed to influence system reform, the session seeks to illuminate these complex interactions. Using an interdisciplinary set of lenses to better understand how and why systems are changing, the symposium will generate theoretical and empirical insights on system redesign and education policy targeting school improvement and equity and methodological lessons for studying system change.
