Session Summary

Beliefs, Identity, Teacher Motivation, and Emotions: Perspectives for Teacher-Student Relationships

Mon, April 16, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Seventh Floor, Room 7.01

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Research on teaching has underlined the important role that teacher beliefs, motivations, identity, and ability have in shaping effective teacher-student relationships. This symposium brings together research on how teacher-student relationships are impacted across a range of social and cultural contexts. Together, papers include data from three countries, to further our understandings of how teachers’ beliefs, motivation, and emotions shape teacher identity and teacher-student relationships. Each paper explores a unique, but complementary aspect of the contemporary demands for teacher-student classroom relationships. Collectively, key aspects of the causes and effects of teacher-student relationships are examined and the functionality for classroom environment research explored as a means to intervene to improve relationship quality.
