Session Summary

Third Space Theory as a Lens for Teacher Education Research

Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Concourse Level, Concourse H Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Emerging out of critical geography (Soja, 1996), third space theory has been used in many ways [e.g., language and cultural studies (Bhabha, 1994), studies related to English Language Learners (Gutiérrez, Baquedano-López, & Tejeda, 1999), practitioner inquiry studies (Author 2)]. Rejecting binaries that pit first and second spaces against one another (e.g., urban/rural, republican/democrat, etc.), this theory posits a third space where the best of both worlds is utilized to enhane both of the original spaces. This session highlights third space theory as a lens for teacher education research. Each paper uses this lens to link theory and practice, re-examine the ways teacher educators engage in research within the field, and discuss the future of research and practice in teacher education.
