Session Summary

Understanding Lesson Study From Different Theoretical Perspectives (Part 2)

Sun, April 15, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Session Type: Poster Session

Abstract

The history of educational improvement is replete with innovations that, despite success in some settings, failed to succeed broadly (refs). Lesson study originated in Japan and is widely credited for that country’s shift from “Teaching as Telling” to “Teaching for Understanding.” It has shown both successes and failures when used outside Japan (refs). Each structured poster in this session will present a lesson study feature posited to impact teachers’ knowledge and/or productive mindset for instructional improvement, along with data on the impact of that feature from a field study. A discussant will synthesize and critique findings, and suggest implications for design of lesson study and professional learning more broadly.
