Curriculum Scholars, Literature, and the Women Who Have Influenced/Inspired Us: Commemorating Dreams and Necessities

Abstract

This symposium celebrates women who have inspired our thought, creativity, and being-in-the-world as curriculum scholars. Often, in our competitive, individualistic Western contexts, we do not sufficiently acknowledge our relations -- those who have come before, forged the way, supported and sustained us, whether in person or through their work. We discuss such diverse influences as writers Laurie Halse Anderson, Leslie Marmon Silko, Toni Morrison, Gloria Anzaldúa, Mary Oliver, Adrienne Rich; philosophers Julia Kristeva, Simone Weil, Hannah Arendt; and, such curriculum theorists as Maxine Greene, Madeleine Grumet, and Janet Miller. We story our relationships with these women and also consider how they have altered our understandings regarding relationality, fangirls, attentiveness, and inclination. Finally, we contemplate our fandom’s significance for curriculum theorizing.
