Session Summary

Using Social-Emotional Learning and Character Development to Turn Around Urban Schools

Mon, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Crown Plaza Times Square, Floor: Fourth Floor, Times Square A Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Low-performing urban schools face insurmountable pressure to increase academic test scores and are often characterized by a negative climate in which staff and students feel disempowered and disengaged. This symposium presents different perspectives on how social-emotional learning and character development (SECD) has been used to address these concerns in urban schools. SECD combines social-emotional skill-building with character inspiration to address school-wide concerns and improve school climate. The four presentations in this symposium describe how SECD can be used to improve school climate and student social-emotional and academic outcomes. This symposium uses qualitative data to establish school turnaround principles, presents empirical studies of school-wide and individual student outcomes, and describes innovative models for bridging SECD into behavioral and academic support programs.
