Session Type: Symposium
The five research papers presented in this symposium, representing a national sample of mathematics teacher education research sites, all utilized the "Community Mathematics Exploration" module (developed by TEACH Math) in elementary mathematics teacher preparation courses. The module is designed to support pre-service teachers to increase students’ learning and achievement by drawing on students’ mathematical and community funds of knowledge. This unique line of research papers explores questions around the effectiveness of implementation and results from inquiry into teacher learning as a result of utilizing community mathematics explorations in a variety of settings (urban, suburban, rural), and with a variety of elementary teacher populations (general education, bilingual, early childhood, and special education).
