Designing and Implementing Culturally Responsive Programming for Advanced Learners in K–12 Schools

Mon, April 16, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Central Park East Room

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

This session is organized around the assumption that culturally responsive practices and program structures are critical to the growth of all advanced learners in K-12 schools. Twelve projects, all funded through the U.S. Department of Education Jacob J. Javits Program, will draw on research in discussing strategies and challenges in implementing culturally responsive practices in (a) the identification of advanced learners; (b) the design and implementation of instructional programs; (c) community and family engagement; (d) school, district, state, and university partnerships; and (e) communicating findings from projects. We also will discuss how project teams stay aware of their own cultural identities and biases, as well as how they know these practices matter to the students and communities they serve.
